Micah Rae Highwalking, “Ma-he-init-soot,” is an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Lame Deer, Montana. Her grandparents are the late Rock and Carol Redcherries and the late George Hiwalker II. Her parents are Cleone Highwalking and Marvel Moristo. Her top motivators are her 3 younger siblings: Marcel (also a Veteran), Fawn, and George-Michael. She was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in May 2010 from West Point, as a Military Police Officer. She has served in a variety of duty positions including Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Cultural Support Team Member (with Special Forces), and a Law and Order Officer. Her overseas assignments and deployments include South Korea and Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Her civilian and military education includes Military Police Basic Officer Level Course, Forensic Material Collection and Exploitation Course, Combat Life Savers Course, Cultural Support Training, U.S. Modern Army Combatives, Special Operations Combatives Program, Airborne School and Air Assault School. 1LT Highwalking has also earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and a minor in Systems Engineering from West Point. She has also received numerous awards and decorations from the military.
Upon completing her military service she was selected to be part of Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Emerging Leader Program and was the only female out of 9 Leaders. She currently lives in Dallas, Texas and works for Vita Coco. She is the first member of her tribe to graduate from the nation’s oldest military academy and 1 of only 5 American Indian West Point graduates.
Micah has been a commencement speaker for colleges and a motivational speaker in and out of Indian Country. She spends her time coaching and mentoring youth wherever she lives and is currently working on becoming a mountaineer in order to climb Mt Everest. Her latest mountains have been Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Denali (Alaska).
